The sound of loud banging woke me. I looked at the alarm clock by Aspynâs bed. It was 5 PM! Weâd fucking slept the entire day away.
âShit!â She jumped up.
âWhatâs wrong?â
âThatâs my mom and Kiki. She normally drops her off at five. I canât believe we slept that long. We have to get dressed. I donât want them to knowâ¦you knowâ¦â
Aspyn scurried around in search of her clothes as I grabbed my jeans and put them on as fast as humanly possible.
Shit. Iâm not prepared to meet her mother.
We made our way out to the living room, and Aspyn answered the door.
Her motherâs eyes landed on me almost immediately. âOh, hello,â she said, looking between us. âI didnât realize you had company.â
Aspynâs niece offered a slight smile. âHi, Troy.â
I waved, trying to act as casual as possible. âHey, Kiki. Good to see you again.â
Mrs. Dumont smirked. âOhâ¦this is Troy.â
Aspyn gnawed on her bottom lip.
Mrs. Dumont was an attractive woman, probably in her mid-fifties. She looked like an older version of Aspyn with the same light brown hair and almond-shaped eyes.
I cocked my head. âI take it Aspynâs mentioned me?â
âOnce or twice,â she said.
Aspyn turned to Kiki. âHow was your weekend?â
âFun. We went apple picking at Wrightâs Orchard.â
âI remember going there as a kid,â I said. âOne of the few places my grandfather would take me when he wasnât working. We went to get apples to make pies for his bakery.â
âDid the pies taste better than those cookies you made for Auntie Aspyn?â
âDefinitely.â I chuckled.
Aspynâs mother turned to me. âYouâre only here in Meadowbrook temporarily, from what I understand?â
Nodding, I cleared my throat. âThatâs correct. Iâll go back to Seattle when my father returns from Europe.â I looked over at Aspyn, but her stoic expression was hard to read.
âI see.â Mrs. Dumont gave me a scrutinizing look. âWell, Iâm heading home.â She gave her granddaughter a hug before turning to me. âEnjoy your time back in Meadowbrook, Troy.â
She didnât need to say anything else. Her message was clear: Youâd better not fuck around with my daughter in the short time youâre here, assnuts.
âThank you,â I said. âIt was wonderful meeting you.â
Unfortunately, before Mrs. Dumont had a chance to fully exit, Kiki looked down at my pants and pointed.
âYour fly is open.â She covered her mouth and giggled.
Aspynâs mom turned back around to face us, and everyone now stared at me.
I looked down and quickly zipped. âWell, thatâs embarrassing. Thank you for noticing that.â
âShe notices everything,â Aspyn said.
Mrs. Dumont gave me one more funny look before she left. Aspyn was still chewing on her lip, seeming tense after her mother very likely drew the correct conclusion about what had been going on here today.
âDid Troy bring any food with him this time?â Kiki asked. âIâm hungry.â
Aspyn walked toward the kitchen. âHe made some cookies again.â
âThe ones that taste like rocks?â Kiki said.
âThey came out really good this time,â Aspyn told her.
I laughed. âTell you what, next time I come for a visit, Iâll bring something especially for you, Kiki.
